Humectants are hygroscopic materials that act as moisturizers by binding water. Glycerol is one of the most popular humectants because it offers very strong water binding properties at a relatively low price. Diglycerol is a good alternative when milder moisturizing properties are required. Compared to glycerol, Diglycerol absorbs less water, more slowly from the human skin. It also gives a less sticky skin feeling than glycerol, which is an important advantage for the formulation of facial lotions. Diglycerol is also very popular in hair care formulations, as it gives a wet look without leaving a greasy feeling.
Emollients are fatty materials which form a thin pellicule on the skin, preventing it from drying out. Because of their skin fat replenishing properties, Diglycerol and Polyglycerol-3 fatty acid esters can be used as skin conditioning emollients in skin care formulations and special lipsticks (for dry lips).
